DSIP is a naturally occurring nonapeptide (9 amino acids) first identified in the 1970s from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during a study on sleep-inducing factors in the brain. Its name derives from early research suggesting it was associated with promoting delta-wave sleep — the deep, slow-wave stage of the sleep cycle. Despite the name, decades of subsequent research have shown DSIP's biological activity is broader and more complex than its original "sleep peptide" designation suggests, and its precise mechanism remains an area of ongoing academic study.

Description

DSIP is a small, blood-brain-barrier-penetrant peptide found endogenously in the hypothalamus and other regions of the central nervous system. It does not fit neatly into a single receptor-target category the way many peptides do; rather, research has linked it to a wide range of neuroendocrine and regulatory systems, which has made it a compound of interest across several unrelated fields of study — from sleep architecture to stress physiology to hormonal regulation.
